Clinical
Studies
In a double blind,
randomized study of 308 overweight adults, McClure and Brusch1 concluded
that subjects using benzocaine lost significantly more weight than
those on the placebo. More appetite suppression was reported with
the benzocaine than in subjects on the placebo. After four weeks,
the benzocaine subjects lost an average of three pounds per week,
which was twice as much as all other subjects. For the patients
needing to loose more weight, the study was extended for an additional
17 weeks. At the end of 17 weeks the benzocaine subjects lost significantly
greater amounts than those on any other regimen and were continuing
to lose an average of over two pounds per week.
Another study
conducted by Gould evaluated 100 adults who had hypertension complicated
by obesity. The patients were given a benzocaine lozenge and instructed
to dissolve one tablet under the tongue before eating, or whenever
hungry. They were also given guidance on following a diet low in
fat and carbohydrates. The average weight loss was 2 pounds per
week for eleven weeks. A fall in blood pressure was also noted.
Dr. P.J. Collipp3
did a double blind, randomized, parallel comparison of benzocaine
lozenges against a placebo lozenge over a six-week period. The subjects
taking the benzocaine lozenge lost significantly more weight than
those on the placebo did. Amazingly, 92% of the subjects taking
the benzocaine lozenge reported at least mild appetite suppression.
